American History X

American History X is a story unfolds by Danny the young brother of Derek who involves in neo-Nazi actions in late 1980s and early 1990s in Los Angles. Driving by his hate to minority groups, Derek kills two blacks and wounding another in brutal way while they are trying to steal his car. As result Derek sentenced to three years in the state prison where he undergoes a transformation in terms of thoughts and believes to leave as changed man.

The movie is trying to deal with racism and its distractive impact on the society. Derek's father racism thoughts and his violence death lead Derek to engage in hate crimes organization. The U.S Department of Justice defines hate crime as “the violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.” Data from National Crime Prevention Council says people like Derek and his gang commit hate crimes for following reasons;
  • They are ignorant about people who are different from themselves (and terrified of the difference).
  • They need to be able to look down on others in order to compensate for their own low self-esteem.
  • They have been brutalized themselves (though not by their victims) and therefore see brutalizing others as fair game.

We can say that Derek was committing hate crimes because of the third reason. Derek was seeking revenge for his father death. Moreover, Derek was overwhelmed by anger and he chose to direct it towards minorities. This anger was portrayed in more than a scene. For example; the dinnertime discussion about Rodney King incident ended up with dramatic violence when Derek started attacking his sister who share her mother and guest their liberal opinion.

Shallow values do not live for a long time and the mask has to fall down someday. Values and believes have built on frail foundation fall down at the first real test. IN the prison Derek saw how his neo-Nazi brotherhood dealing with eachother and how they are dealing with colors people. They are buying drugs from Mexican gang and deal it to their own white people. Derek was not happy about that and he walked away but, wasn't that simple. This action made the gang angry at him; the gang rape him on the shower room on the guard watch.

The movie's massage is calling people who are adapting or may adapt racism to rethink before they go farther and do something they will regret. The movie is represents Derek as example of how a man could change. In prison, as Derek is walking away from the gang brotherhood he is hooking up with black inmate, Lamont. Lamont, who was sentenced to six years because he stole a TV, has a big influence on Derek transformation. Thought at the beginning Derek scorn Lamont, but after while he realized that Lamont is his only true friend. Moreover, Derek was sure that his going to be attacked by blacks and it was just a matter of time before that happens. Yet, the only harm he got while he is in prison was not from blacks, it was from his neo-Nazi brotherhood.

Though Derek has changed forever, he could not just walk away from his past and take break. There are two issues he must take care of right after he got out of the prison. First issue his brother Danny, Danny was following his big brother steps. He become skin headed, adapting Nazi thoughts and have tendency to use violence against minorities. Second issue was his relationship with neo-Nazi organization. He tried to cut his relationship with all his old brotherhood and send clear massage to his organization mentor to say away from Denny.

Derek succeeded convincing his brother to get racism out of his mind and change his attitude, but he could not save him. In addition, he cut his relationship with everyone related to his dark past yet, they won't let him live in peace. The price that Derek has to pay to learn this lesson was not cheap. He lost his brother and causing troubles not only for himself, but also for his family members.

Motorcycle Diaries

Motorcycle Diaries taken place in 1952 when two young friends, Alberto Grando and Ernesto "Che" Guevara decide to go on trip to discover Latin America that they only know from books. "The mighty one" their motorcycle made the trip possible, starting from Argentina and going through Chile, Peru, and Columbia and end up in Venezuela. This movie is putting spotlight on an important period of Guevara's life and how this journey has changed his life for ever.

Traveling has so many benefits like enrich your experience, enhance your understanding for the world and people. There is nothing more beautiful than visiting new places and been introduced to a new culture. People who do not travel are missing a lot of pleasure in their lives. I have been in eight different countries and studying abroad is wonderful experience I whish everybody can have it. This is exactly what happened to Guevara. His traveling has opened his eyes on issues he wasn't aware of before hid trip. On other words, Guevara wouldn't be Guevara we know if he did not make this trip.

The movie was depicting the contrast among Latin America countries in terms of landscaping and weather. However, they were all shearing one thing, people suffering from Injustice. Guevara and Alberto were not just taking pictures in every city they pass by. Yet, they were interacting with the people and having talk with them. They confronted many distressing stories during their journey, people deprived from their basic rights and being under their system mercy.

Spending three weeks at leper colony along the Amazon River had the most influence on Guevara personality. Patients were segregated from doctors, nurses and nuns. In facts, patients were detached from the whole world by the river. By the time Guevara got in this colony he has reached a high level of certainty that something has to be done to take away all injustice against the people. Guevara preferred to continue celebrating his birthday on the other side of the Amazon River. Though his asthma sickness could strike him anytime, he swim to the people he thought they need him more than any medication.

Crossing the river in that way, Guevara announced himself a revolutionary. The river was a simple of inequality, injustice and schemes that Guevara tired to challenge and beat. At that time, his personality has totally shaped by the experience he had during this journey. His vision was cleared and his goal was big and he is changed forever.

Beat the Drum

Beat the drum is a movie took place in KwaZulu Natal region, South Africa and it was filmed in 2003. The movie follow Musa journey from his village to Johannesburg. Musa was living in a village stroked by mystery disease killing the village people including his parents. Musa the recent orphaned kid leaves his village to look for his uncle and get money to buy a cow for his grandmother.

This journey has changed Musa's life forever; there were several twist and turns in this journey. First turn in Musa's journey was meeting Nobe the trucker who was convinced to take Musa with him to Johannesburg. Second turn was discovering that the AIDS was the mystery disease was killing his village people. Third turn in Musa's Journey was when he called to live in a foster care where he can get education and time to enjoying his childhood.

Musa was shock by what Johannesburg has of streets, buildings and cars once he got there. He found himself among homeless kids forming a gang living on robbery. He tried to make his own living by washing cars. Dealing everyday life taught him so much about the life including what is ADIS.

South Africa currently is confronting the most severe ADIS epidemic in the world. Data from avert.org saying there are five and a half million people living with HIV in South Africa, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day. Although, AIDS is attacking all society sectors however, it's sometimes seen as disease of the poor.

From the movie point view, there are two aspects are responsible for spreading of the disease. First aspect, people silence and ignorance, people are ignoring the wide spread disease and pretending there is nothing happening among them. Thought this killer is walking in their neighborhoods and entering their houses taking their beloved once. This ignorance made worse and contribute to the increment of HIV infected. In addition, feeling stigma and people refusing to talk about it prevent them to get a proper treatment. Second aspect, sexual behavior especially prostitution, the movie is depicting that the prostitution is number one responsible for HIV diffusion among the people. In the movie prostitutes were everywhere on highways, main streets, back streets. See this video for more information about prostitution in South Africa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I44mN810aiU

The way that Musa name was used, spelled and pronounced in the movie is exactly the same way that Arabic speakers are using. Musa is a popular Arabic name for the Jewish prophet – Moses in Hebrew and Moshe as standard. This made me think there was a connection between the main character (Musa) either to Islam or Arabic language. According to the official website of the movie, the movie took place in KwaZulu Natal region. Data from www.southafirca.info says KwaZulu Natal people are speaking isiZulu, followed by English and Afrikaans and none of these languages is closed to Arabic. At the same time, it was obvious from movie that the villages were not Muslims. So, the connection between the character and his name has not cleared yet.

The movie is a massage or an invitation for people to fight this extreme epidemic. The movie suggesting that the first step to fight this epidemic is by spreading awareness among the people and this is what the movie title comes from. In many cultures, the drum has been used to call people attention or for announcing. So, beating the drum figuratively means making announcement or calling people attention.

Singapore Dreaming

A family consisted of six members having big dreams living on a small island. Singapore Dreaming is a movie representing a typical middle-class Singaporean family hoping for a better life. However, the reality was harsh like a rock which the family dreams crashed on it. When the patriarch of the family won two million in the lottery they thought this was the end of their struggles. But, destiny had different opinion.
The Movie Characters
Poh Huat the patriarch was working as a lawyer’s clerk seizing goods from credit card home debts. As he performs his job, he feels jealous from the home owners, whishing he had a condo in high neighborhood like them. His housewife Siew Luan was simple person content with her life. She was working hard cleaning and cooking for her family. They have one son, Seng and one daughter, Mei. Seng had just come from the United State after finishing his studying. The family was hoping that Seng would get a job and contribute to the family and improve its situation. And his fiancée couldn't wait to see her dream come true which was having family and children. Seng was self-centered unlike his sister. Mei was working as secretary maintaining a good relationship with her boss. Her husband just quit from military and he is working in insurance company making small money.
Public Houses
The majority of Singaporean people are living in public houses; since the cost of private housing is very high. Public houses are affordable and provided by the government for middle and lower-class. Public housing in Singapore as such is not generally considered as a sign of poverty or lower standards of living as compared to public housing in other countries (Australia, England etc). www.wikipedia.org. On the other hand, moving to privet housing is a dream for most of Singaporean people and Poh and his family was one of them.
English Usage
English language is one of the four official languages in Singapore. This is why it was strongly present during the movie. English goes back to colonial Singapore. As more of its people experienced learning English at school, English became widely spoken. The use of English has increased still further and since 1987 English is the main language. Most of children grow up bilingual form infancy and learn more languages as they grow up. www.leeds.ac.uk.

According to Singaporean government, Singaporean consisted of Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9%, other 1.4% (2000 census) and each of these ethnics is speak its own language. I believe they needed a common ground unite these three ethnics. So, they found English as the right choice, because especially English has root in Singapore to colonial era and because it is the international language. Consequently, English has became fourth official language since 1987.
Foreigners in Singapore
Foreigners in Singapore were mainly represented by two characters. First character was the maid was working for Mei she was from Philippine. Second character was China who had interesting conversation with Mei's husband. Probably she was depicting the way foreigners looking at Singaporean. She was saying that Singaporean always complaining about their situations. In addition, they did not suffer or encounter hard life for example lack of food or security.
Wonderful Scene
After Poh Huat death his wife Siew Luan filled with sadness because of three facts, losing her husband was one of them. Second fact, was uncovered during the funeral when she found out that her husband had mystery. Finding this bitter true came down harsh on Siew and maximized her sorrow. This fact made Siew angry and put her in silence for several days after the funeral. Third fact was the greatest scene in the whole movie. If truth be told, this scene one of the most wonderful scenes I have ever seen. The scene took place when Mei tried to push her mother to break her silence. After several attempts Mei did to urging her mother to talk. Siwe talked and said" I was singing I even was number one in singing contest at the school. Poh promised me to take care of me all my life. Now he left and I can sing no more.
What Siwe meant by these words that she had singing talent and she was dreaming to be a singer before she met Poh. After that, Poh promised her to take care of her all the time and she doesn't need to sing anymore. So, she gave her talent and dreams a way. She thought that Poh going to be there forever. Now she doesn't have either. She killed her dreams and talent and Poh gone forever. This is a big lesson for everyone who wrongly thinking of giving his/her talent away for "love". The true love is where the dreams thrive and flourish not where the dreams die and deteriorate.

Tsotsi

Hope Set Him Free

Tsotsi’s mother was dying from HIV disease and his father was only family. Tsotsi’s father was abusive and cruel so, he ran away to live in huge abandoned pipes. He was involved in murders and robbing. Tsotis lived on survival base without goal or dreams his only concern was feeding himself. Until one night felt desperate and stole a woman’s car and ran away. As he was driving away he found shocked to find an infant in the backseat. Since that his life has changed forever.

Tsosti and his gangsters were living in Soweto slum on the edge of Johannesburg. The houses were randomly spread most of them were missing the basic utilities such as water and electricity. They look like shacks some of them made of concrete and some made of wood covered by steel board. In contrast, inside the city which is resembled any modern city with contemporary infrastructure and facilities. Johannesburg is an up to date city has big streets and buildings full of lights and mixed ethnics groups. On the other hand, the Soweto slum consists of African ethnic background only. That gives an idea about the living situation of Africans compared to the other ethnics although; apartheid was not depicted in this movie.

Tsosti was surrounded by his three gang members. They were Boston, Die Aap, and Butcher. Boston was supposed to be a teacher, but he did make it to the final test. His talk about decency and education enraged Tsosti. Die Aap was Tsosti’s friend from childhood. He always depended on Tsosti on everything and never did anything on his own. The third member is Butcher who went too far by murdering two people during the film.

The three members of the gang involved in robbing ended with murder. Boston was not happy about how things ended up and started reprimanding and questioning Tsosti about his past. The conversation took violence turns when Tsotsi started attaching Boston and beat him. After that, Tsotsi ran away, but he did not know where to go. Eventually, he sat cross from a big house when he noticed a woman struggling opening the garage. He jumped in the car and shot the woman when she was trying to stop him. As he was driving off he found that there is an infant in the backseat. After spending several minutes of hesitation he decided to take the child with him. This decision made sharp turn in his life.

Tsosti tried to take care of the child, but he couldn't. He asked the help of a single mom which was Miriam. He started to take the child to Miriam to feed him and take care of him. He saw Miriam the opposite of him. She was a responsible single mom working hard to support her child. As days went on he started having feelings for her and she returned these feelings. Moreover, he saw himself through that child and named him after his real name "David". The child refreshes Tsotsi memories and wake up the human inside him. The child was symbolic of hope in desperate days and a light in otherwise dark future.

Having the child is one of three major events that shake Tsotsi's life. The second event that contributes to the sharp turn in Tsotis's life is his conversation with the "Stolen legs man". During their conversation Tsotis asked the paralyzed man" why do you go on? When you live like a dog? The old man replied "I like to feel the sun on the street. Even with these hands I can still feel the heat. That answer brought the tears into Tostis eyes. The third event that happened to Tsotis was the love that has born recently between him and Miriam. Loving someone and knowing that she return the same feeling had great impact on Tsotsi.

City of god

City of God was released in 2002 in Brazil and 2003 for the world wide. This movie is base on true story taken place in City of God in west of Rio de Janeiro early 80's. The movie is depicting how the crime effects poor population in the slum and how poorness affects the crime vice versa. Poor and unenlightenment people with high crimes rate among them are living in a circle. Poor people giving birth of kids who grow up and make poor families and the same goes for crimes and unenlightement. The first generation the movie was depicting committing crimes with limit. They were armed robbers and thieves but not killers. The following generation follows the pervious generation steps. However, the following generation has gone further and started committing crimes with no limits and more severity. In addition, crime diffusion continues to find its way to the new generation like a chain.

Poverty Poverty and Poverty

**Ali bin Abetaleb said "wherever poverty exists, the miscreantness exists along with it" and he said "If poorness is a man I would kill him". He meant that poorness is always associates with disorder, war, spread of diseases and high crimes rate. There are many live examples depicting this fact. Check the list of World's 50 poorest countries http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0908763.html and ask this question; what kind of news we usually hear about these countries? We usually hear war, spread of diseases, disorder and corruptions. It doesn't have to be a form of country only but, it could be any form of community such as neighborhood or a family. Poor community produces high percentage of hapless people with not so much to loose and they have tendency to use violence. This kind of community provide expedient climate to plant crimes and gangster. What I meant by all that, the poverty is the base where most of problems comes from and this what the movie is depicting.
Chain

Crimes, violence and drugs were like a chain each generation spread them in the neighborhood and surroundings area before passes it to the next generation. Drugs produce gangster, gangster produce violence and addicted people. Some addicted become a part of the gang and uses violence. Victim of the violence uses violence to revenge, violence produce violence and so on. Best example of this chain was presented in the movie by Knockout Ned character. He was peaceful man seeking revenge after his beloved woman raped and his father and brother were killed. In order to get help to achieve his goal and kill Li'l Zé he became a member of Cenoura gang who was the rival of Li'l Zé gang.
Favela

The origin of Cidade de Deus, or City of the Gods, is a city that was built on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960's. It was built by a Brazillian government which had become obsessed with the benefits of capitalism, economic rationalization, and foreign debt. The city was built for all the people of Rio who could not afford housing and living essentials. It was initially devoid of roads and buses. Eventually it was dominated by gangs of indiscriminately murderous drug-dealers.

Recently, Favelas resemble tiny independent country inside a country. This independent country has one or several gangsters playing the government role. They control, arrest and punish. Moreover, each gangster respects the other gangster's boundary and any interfere with this law could lead to a war. Moreover, the police and any other official organization are not excluded from this law. If the police have to break this law they should prepare themselves ahead of time and plan as it a big war. They usually choose one of two options; either shoot from outside the Favela or go inside with hundreds of armed soldiers.

Favela in the Movie
Media has powerful massages can form and portrayal of entire cultures and people. I know how Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful, varied and big city. However, now every time I read or I hear something about it, pictures from the movie cross my mind. Pictures of Li'l Zé and his gang are walking in the small passages of the city of god killing with cold blood. People are living in congestion where they use every space for building homes and shops. People were difficult to live in peace. Beside the gangster there were the runts who mug residents and hold-ups shops.
Island
People who are living in a Favela have totally different life style than the people outside like separate island in an ocean. Coming out from a Favela and going to the city like coming form wet dark room to a dry room full of lights and colors. Favela is crowded place isolate poor people from the community and put them under mercy of gangster.

Facts about the Movie

  • God was filmed in a housing project called Cidade Alta, whose drug trade was run by a guy named Paulo Sergio Magno, who just happened to be arrested in the theatre lobby while attending a special screening of God. Who said films don't make the world a better place? According to http://www.sick-boy.com/cityofgod.htm.

  • Most of these actors had never acted before, and were, in fact, residents of Favelas such Vidigal and the Cidade d Deus. According to http://www.wikipedia.org/

Veer-Zaara

In last movie we had been in the most populated country in the world either by humans or bikes. This time we are in the second largest populated country in the world not by humans only, but bikes as well. However, in this movie we are discussing a more complicated issue than the previous one. This movie was discussing the conflict that started in 1947 between Pakistan and India over Kashmir territory. Moreover, this conflict was addressed as one exists between the two governments. The two peoples have nothing to do with it. In other words it was political issue more than a clash between the two nations.
Veer-Zaara is an Exception
Bollywood has totally different style film than the one in west. It is influenced by local culture. The popularity of Indian movies goes beyond India's boundaries to another Asian nations for example: Pakistan and Bangladesh. Moreover, Indian movies have fans in Gulf Countries as well like Kuwait and Emirates. I have seen a lot of Indian movies myself when I was a teenager. Most of Gulf Countries Indian movies fans are between ages 12-18 and when they grow up they start making fun of them! In gulf countries we have many idioms related to or quoted from the way that Indian movies are. For example; when we describe something so silly or unbelievable for example: we say, "You won't believe what happened to me it was an Indian movie". Or when we describe something takes too long we say "Why are you taking too much time to dress up, is it Indian movie"? So, why is Veer-Zaara is an exception movie? There are several characteristics differentiate Veer-Zaara from other Indian movies. First, usually Indian movies goal is to entertain the audience by presenting a love story mixed with action where the "good guys always win in the end". In Veer-Zaara case the cast had further goal which was brining peace between warring nations. Second, most of the time Indian movies are "too romantic" or "go too far" and "full of fairy tale". On the other hand, the story in Veer-Zaara was believable though there were many exaggerations. For example, stays at the prison for 20 years just to clear his beloved woman's name and she spends the same period keeping his dream alive. Please see the two below videos that I have chosen to show you what I meant by unbelievable actions and stories that Bollywood usually have.

Some Indian Culture Characteristics

Usually movies reflect cultures; depict places, environment and lives of people. And if we would examine Indian movies such as Veer-Zaara we will see some characteristics of India presented in the movie. For instance, singing and dancing, emotions and English are characteristics of Bollywood films. There was an English word fitted in every two lines. Some people contribute this usage to British influence on the Indian people during the coloniel era between 1858 and 1937 when the Indian region including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh was ruled by the British Crown. Let us suppose the English usage was because of the British influence. We are left with two questions there; Why don't Pakistan and Bangladesh have the same influence on them? Are pop music and contemporary western life style part of British influence? I don't thinks so. I believe British have some influence, but the biggest influence part was American culture. Indians think that America is the moddel that they should follow. Moreover, I have been told by some Indians and friends who went to India that western culture are major effect on large cities, people's life style and teenagers are trying to resemble west as much as they can.

There are 1.4 million Indians working and living in Saudi and I worked with and have Indians friends . I can see how singing and dancing are part of their culture. They listen to music at their job site, home and while they are driving. I can hear them singing all the time. So, for me it is natural to see singing and dancing play a big part of their movies. In addition, Indians show emotions and cry so often in sad situations and that was present in the movie and the real life as well. I have been told that the Indian audience is reacting with the actors crying and you can see them filled with tears whenever there is a sad scene. Watch blew video "when Bollywood cry"

Over simplifying

There were more than one occasion where cases and situations were over simplified, for example:the relationship between Pakistan and Indian peoples. The movie shows there is harmony or no hard feeling between the two peoples. Nevertheless, there is a tension between these two nations, and it cannot be denied. It is not a matter of political issue only as the movie is trying to address, but in fact it is much more.

Landscape
The movie takes place on two places a village located in the Punjab Region, India and in Lahore City, Pakistan. In India, the movie did not show the population density that India known is for because the movie takes place in a rural area where Veer was raised. Farming was its people's main activity. On the other hand, a dense city was depicted in Lahore, Pakistan. In the same time, the movie was filmed in Purana Qila which is an historical place out side New Delhi. Bollywood often usws this place because of the beauty it has.

Conclusion

In general the movie went beyond Bollywood limit and has sat a new concept of Indian movies. In this movie the cast have decided to get over the traditional stories that Bollywood has stick with for a long time though it has some exaggerations and over simplifying facts. I like the backgrounds, views and the songs. I have put Do Pal song in my favorite foreign songs enjoy the songs and have fun reading the lyrics below.

Do, pal ruka, khwaabon ka kaarvaanAur phir, chal diye, um kahaan, ham kahaan Do pal ki thi, ye dilon ki daastaanAur phir, chal diye, tum kahaan, ham kahaan Aur phir chal diye, tum kahaan, ham kahaan

Tum the ke thi koyi ujli kiranTum the ya koyi kali muskaayi thi Tum the ya tha sapnon ka tha saawanTum the ke khushiyon ki ghata chhaayi thi Tum the ke tha koyi phool khila Tum the ya mila tha mujhe naya jahaan Do pal ruka khwaabon ka kaarvaanAur phir chal diye tum kahaan ham kahaan Do pal ki thi, ye dilon ki daastaanAur phir chal diye, tum kahaan, ham kahaan Aur phir chal diye, tum kahaan, ham kahaan

Beijing Bicycle

China has the largest population on the earth 1.3 Billions and the forth biggest country in world 3,704,426 mi2. That’s not all; china has also the largest number of bicycle about nine millions bicycles in Beijing alone. The bicycle is a simple the director has used to depict the life of countryside teenager moved to urban area looking for a job.

The movie starts when a countryside teenager got a job in a Delivery Company as messenger. As part of his job he received a new well build nice bicycle, he should pays for it from his delivery charge portion till he own it. After that, he shares equally with the company any delivery charge. Guei was happy with his “dream job” working hard delivering packages.

As Guei was working he visited places he hasn’t being before. He saw the big contrast between social classes. Where lower class hardly keep up with basic life expenses and between upper class who are living in luxury. But, that did not mean anything to him as long as he riding his bike and delivering. Unfortunately, those happy days did not last for long time. His bike was stolen caused him firing from his job. After negotiate with his boss he had his word to have him back in the company if he got his bike back. In fact, He did not just lose his job and his bike, it was more than that.

Bicycle in Beijing goes beyond a tool of transportation. It is prestige and proud source for its owner. Moreover, it is reflecting the owner personality. For teenager bike consider as entertainment time tool and the way your biking skills are important as well.
Guei started searching for his bike in the crowded with small odds to find it. Yet his search did not last for long time before he found it with Jian. Jian is a teenager was promised many times by his father to get him a bicycle .But he couldn’t because of financial difficulties the family going through. Jian clime that he bought the bike from used cycle by money he was stolen from his father. In the same time Guei is only thinking about getting his bike back no matter what in order to get back to his work.

As mention previously in Beijing the bike consider away more than a transportation tool. Jian wanted the bike to seducing the girl he wanted and ride with his friends. Unfortunately, the girl he wanted went with someone else after small fight with him. She went with a “cool guy” according to the movie teenager standard, who was dyed his hair, smoker, has biking skills and wearing western clothing.

One of common difficulties that rural people has to deal with once they moved into the city is harshness. The main character Guei has to be beaten many times. Not because, he is week or easy to get, he just not used to face violence in villages. And this is why he got beaten in the end of the movie along; he just was lost in crowded. In addition that was hint to indicate that person is will be beaten more and going to take some time before he could adapted to the harshness city life style.

Something funny in noticed in the movie. There were many people brushing their tooth. Though I thought this habit doesn’t excite in bottom class. Do you think poor Chinese aware about the important of having healthy mouth that much?

Once Were Warriors

Once were warriors is a movie was filmed in Auckland, New Zealand in 1994 based on novel by Alan Duff. This movie is tried to enlighten some aspects of Maori culture and life style. According to Wikipedia.org, The word Māori refers to the indigenous Polynesian peoples of New Zealand, and to their language. Archaeological and linguistic evidence (Sutton 1994) suggests that probably several waves of migration came from Eastern Polynesia to New Zealand between AD 800 and 1300. The origins of Māori as a separate people relate to those of their Polynesian ancestors (see Polynesian culture). Māori oral history describes the arrival of the ancestors from Hawaiki (a mythical homeland in tropical Polynesia) by large ocean-going canoes (waka: see Māori migration canoes). Migration accounts vary among Māori tribes (iwi), whose members can identify with different waka in their genealogies or whakapapa.

Maori men are musclers and well build bodies in general and they often resort to their fist to settle down any disagreement. There were some scenes shown men works out. They have popular dance called Bakah see the video below the New Zealand rugby team perform this dance.

The family that was depicted in the movie is Jack and Beth a couple of Maori and their two sons and daughter. Jack was alcoholism addicted cannot hold on to a job and he was mainly depending on dole to feed his family. The movie is shown Jack and his friends are heavy drinker with a bottle in his hand almost every time. Moreover, smoking was strongly present in the movie shown all Maoris as smokers. Read about the smoking rate among Maoris http://www.beehive.govt.nz/ViewDocument.aspx?DocumentID=17294

Many social problems were presented in the movie beside drinking and smoking. And one of these is domestic violence which was hit the family. Jack was using his fist against his family specially his wife. I noticed that action was not surprising the family or the friends’ and they saw it as normal situation could any family go through. I remember a fanny statement was said by Beth friend’s she said” keep your mouth shut and your legs opened. Which is indicated the upper hand of the men in this particular society. Unlike the woman in Pakeha society who is working side by side with the men and live independently.

Drinking, unemployment, smoking and violence are serious problems in Maori society. However, we cannot reprove Pakeha for that. In addition, it is normal to see most of officials are Pakeha .Because; they are the majority of the population. I did not notice any kind of oppression of Maori by Pakeha in the movie. However, there is a big question mark about the Maori being living in ghetto

There is no good or bad ghetto and there is no comparison between a ghetto and another neighborhood because, ghetto always wins as worse place. Poorness, lock of security, deprivation and pollution are lineaments for almost any ghetto around the world. so, when it is compared with countryside the ghetto look like a dark, humid and worn room has a big window with nice view the sun light pass through it along with fresh air, this window is the countryside. This kind of enviromment affects the family in negative way for sure. Each member of the family could be affected by different way.

Each of the family members was presenting a way of life. Nig the oldest son, was kind of person who turns his back to his family. Trying to forget the problems that associate with his family and looking for gang as alternative. Grace the daughter, ambitious teenager loving her family looking forward for better life. Who as killed herself after had gotten rapped by her bully uncle in her own bed. Boogie, who had lost and ended up in juvenile system before he made a dramatic change in his life and personality to be good person helping his mother to start all over again,.

Jack loved his Beth yet. It doesn’t make any good as long as he treats her and their sons that way. In the end of the movie she got that and she finely came to place where she knew he is not going to change and stop and make U turn and continue no more. After that, she confronted him and said “you still sleeve for your drink and fist”.

I personally believe the same I’m always say that for people around me. Your love to me is nothing as long as love does not combined with respect care, and good treatment.

Rabbit Proof Fence

Through out history dominator always trying to alter the ruled nation's culture, language and religion to fit the dominator set of interest. For example; in all countries French has colonized, they tried to spread the French language along with some French values. And almost the same tragedy happened here in the United State when the official tried to fit Native American to white man shoos. They opened schools in Indian Reservation to teach small Indian English and Christianity. So, what happened in Australia is not exception. However, the approach Australian white man used was cruel and savage.

Removing kids from their parents forcibly and tear out the family apart is something can not be described less than a savage. Living in ghastly environment even made worse. Living in a place resemble military base in middle of a war, missing basic facilities like bathroom and using pocket instead. Moreover, sleeping in one big crowded room and sharing beds sometimes. All that was surrounded by a cruel atmosphere missing a passion and loving environment that kids need especially if they were deprived form their parents.

They had to walk 1300 Miles was separate them form their village and most of this distance was a desert. At the first sight I said "wait a minute I been there, I know the place very well. It reminded me by my country where most of it a desert. Where the yellow carpet is lay down for all seasons with no exception and where either green or white carpets are not available all the time. And scattered plants fight the dryness of the desert by keeping moisture in, and keep it away from the sun.

There was more than a scene during the movie where you can see a pack of camels. Usually camels are a mark of desert. Camels are two types 1- Dromedary 2- Bactrian and both of them living in Asia as the below picture show

According to http://www.camelsaust.com.au/ the first camel in Australia was imported from the Canary Islands in 1840 by Horrock. The next major group of 24 camels came out in 1860 for the ill-fated Bourke and Wills expedition. The first time the explorer Giles used camels he travelled 220 miles in 8 days without giving water to the camels. He later went from Bunbury Downs to Queen Victoria Springs (WA), a distance of 325 miles in 17 days and gave one bucket of water to each camel after the twelfth day.

Densha Otoko

Densha Otoko is Japanese movie based on true love story. The 23 years old Otoko brought to the movie when he intervened with drunken man was harassing several women in a train. Otoko start dating with Hermes who was harassed in that train. The movie was filmed in Tokyo which depicted in the movie as contemporary city full of lights and crowded with people and cars living in hectic pace.

The main point in this movie is about the people who are hiding behind their screen the internet wire is their connection with outside world and the modem is almost the only communication channel. This kind of people has developed different life style away from the people avoid interacting and grows fear feeling form outside in their self. It is difficult for them to leave this life style and starts re-discover the world again and deal with outside world.

Otoko had a group of people give him advices and guide him and tell him how to deal with his date. This group called Instant messenger support group that he chatting with them online.
Otoko from middle or less class he is living by his own in small room. Or we can say his home was a single crowded room. The movies shown the Japanese are using small space either in home or office. This is why Otoko was stunning by the way was Hermes’s home. Thought it was regular size to American home standard.

Though they are from different society class both of them are using the train in their transportation. I don’t know is it a writer mistake or the train is used by all classes in Japan. Anyway there was emphasizing on the train role on Tokyo people and considered an aspect of Tokyo life style.

I saw Apple product in the movie more than once. First one in first seen in the train Otoko was using iPod. Second, his girl friend father has a Macintosh Computer. Moreover, I remembered that one of my Japanese friends told me that iPod is popular in Japan. I don’t know how Apple could invaded this market who is full of advanced local electronic products it is like bringing corn to America from another country. Maybe because Apple products are high quality or maybe as Masotoshi said “Japanese prefers things imported from USA to Japanese”.

There are two points I would like to address about culture across. First, though the movie was romantic/comedy, we as Americans and International students understood and laugh about it. In other worlds we laugh on Japanese jokes which is something related to culture in first place. Second, one of the seen Otoko was looking at the moon and said “what a beautiful moon” then he took a picture of it. Usually the moon has special position in Middle Eastern culture. They always see the full moon as beauty symbolic and use it in their pomes, songs or even when someone flirts with his beloved one something that Americans don’t have. So, I’m wondering do Japanese have the same feeling as Middle Eastern about the moon or it was just a seen.

One of the most important massages that this movie try to convey is given a chance away is not affordable thing. This is what Otoko friends tried to convince Otoko to do and they succeed. Maybe they were see them self in him, this is why they have changed after he succeed and found the love. They start looking for their "own love" and start to see the world in whole new light as singles or couples.

Goodbye Lenin

Goodbye Lenin is a movie tried to cover one of most important era in German history which is the between 1989 & 1990. In this era West and East German have united and Berlin Wall fall down. The movie is shown vast different between the west and east of Berlin landscape. East Berlin look like did not touch since the World War 2 keeping the same building same design and same layout. Moreover, the isolation played important role in the community make its own people like prisoners and the East German like big prison with services.

Berlin wall fallen effect is not limited to Germany but it covers the whole world. Tens of walls were dividing the world fall along with Berlin wall a wall between every communism and capitalist country.

However, the movie just tried to cover the immediate change that was happening to the East of Berlin right after the wall fallen. For example: International companies that coming from the west and starts doing business in the East Berlin and the western food and furniture style as well.

In general the movie wasn't good for many rezones. First, was not accurate as it should be for example; there was a seen shown people from west of Berlin working as carriers in the east. Which is can not be true because East Berlin was economically desperate did not have jobs to offer even for its own people reversal the West Berlin. Second, the movie was focusing on the characters more than what happing around which made the film drive around small circle.

Seducing Dr. Lewis

Seducing Dr. Lewis is great movie depicting the life style of small village people in Quebec, Canada. In this is movie you can see how some villages in Canada are isolated from the rest of the country. Ferryboat is the only connection with outside world carries them their goods and letters from and to the nearest city.

The movie started with moaning sound comes up through the village while they having sex. The director or the writer meant to show the happiness level that they had because people having sex are more likely happy and in good mode. But everything has changed when the fishing dried up and put its inhabitant in danger.

The new Mayer toke over the mission that his former could accomplish which is getting some company to build their factory in their town. One of the company conditions is that the village must have a permanent doctor which is very difficult to have. Because the village has only 120 people living in and their only entertainment is hung out in restaurant and drink till late time.
While the village people struggle trying to find a solution for their problem the government was totally absent which is make it extra difficult for them. Motivated by their ties and love to their area started contact with every doctor and got Dr. Lewis and in order to convince sign up for the five years they had to deceive him and tried to pretty the village for him.

After Dr. Lewis found out about everything he was angry and on edge of leaving the village but he turned back and sign up the contract. This make the company start the plastic factory and employ all the villages people which made them a happy village people and in good mode that could have sexy with.

La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil

This movie is taken place in Senegal which is an Islamic African country where they have contrast. The majority of its people are poor facing difficulties getting the minimum needs. On the other hand, there are some construction going on and tourist’s places living in different world separated from the majority. Moreover, the governments seem not popular or not having the credibility which is reflects on the Sun Newspaper selling rate which belong or managed by the government. Because Senegal is former French colonial French language became the official language for the country.

The movie started with a scene about woman accused of thieving and put in jail without questioned. Then, she kept saying “this country is going crazy”. I believe the director meant to show the chaos was happening there.

Sili started her journey looking for a job motivated by her mother bad situation and looking forward for batter life. As disable girl she faced more difficulties in her new job as newspaper seller. However, that did not turn her down and did not disappoint the newspaper dealer. She got great support from one of her male friend who tried to protect her from dangerous specially the one from other newspaper seller boys. Who found new girl competitor not acceptable.

After all, she succeeded and sold all The Sun Newspaper addition she had. She did not save the money she had. In fact her first thing she did with her money is buying an umbrella for her disable mom and tired to enjoy with her friends by the rest of the money. In end of the movie, her competitor ran away with her crutches which had her male friend to carry her on his back as indicator of continues hard time she is going to face.
